For three decades, we have helped leading brands to design stores that do more than just look good. From Birmingham to Beijing, we’ve learned that the foundations of successful retail design are universal, and they always start with understanding human behaviour.

“When asked about my job, I say 'My job is simple. It is to get customers into the store, get them to stay as long as possible, and then, get them to return'.”

5 ‘Golden Rules’ of Retail

Here are our five timeless principles for creating retail concepts that attract, engage and convert.

The 3 Second Rule

“Your store façade and windows are your business card and billboard combined.”

You have three seconds to make a first impression. In that moment, your store must tell the customer who you are, what you do, and why should they step inside. Miss that moment and you miss the customer. Always remember, first impressions count.

→  A strong façade states your name clearly, communicates the offer instantly and invites customers into the  journey. Think of it as the start of the journey, not an afterthought.

Where The Eye Leads The Feet Follow

“The store should read like a book”.

A good store guides customers naturally from one area to the next, one page at a time. Use focal points, clear adjacencies and engaging sightlines to pull people forward and create momentum. This paces the customer through the whole store and creates a human reason to travel.

→ Pace the customer journey one ‘chapter’ at a time, ensuring every step creates an opportunity to buy.

You Pay For Every Square Metre Of Retail Space, -‘Use it’.

“Make every corner count.”

Navigate with impact and “make the product the hero”. Use every square meter of your store to tell a story, highlight a product and create a reason to pause. Invest in backwater areas of the store to make them interesting. Curated collections, thoughtful merchandising and well-placed impulse moments turn visitors into customers.

→ Smart navigation and strong product presentation make the product the hero, converting browsers into buyers.

Paint The Store With Light

“Use light to create in-store theatre”.

Imagine sitting at a perfectly lit restaurant, when the room tiptoes away. Lighting shapes what customers see and how they feel, move and shop. Focus lighting to highlights products, not walkways. Use contrast and atmosphere to make the store feel alive and keep customers engaged for longer.

→Whether in electronics or hospitality, the principle remains the same: the longer customers stay, the more likely they are to buy.

Communication Is Key

“Communicate your store like a newspaper.”

Structure your in-store communication like editorial content: bold headlines for navigation, sublines for categories, and smaller text for product detail. Whether you communicate through digital or printed media, make it clear, meaningful and on brand.

→ Strong headlines attract attention; clear explanation builds confidence and reassures customers at the point of purchase.

“After 30 years designing retail worldwide, we have learned one simple truth: customer behaviour is remarkably consistent. Cultures vary, trends shift and politics change, but the fundamentals of how people shop stay the same."
